Why Franklin Homes Need Careful Septic Planning

The Kentucky Geological Survey describes Simpson County as a gently rolling plain with underground drainage and sinkhole topography in almost every part of the county, most pronounced in the central and western areas. Its Simpson County karst page warns that sewage is not filtered from water entering a karst aquifer and that waste dumped into sinkholes can easily reach underground streams.

Franklin runs its own wastewater treatment plant with a pretreatment program, and its sewer reaches beyond the city only along those two corridors. Franklin-area homes outside that area that use septic systems are permitted through the Barren River District Health Department.

The Census Bureau's survey counts about 4,200 homes in Franklin, with a 1973 median build year and a little over half owner-occupied.

Franklin Elevations, Water and Septic Ground

The 2020 Census counted 10,176 residents in Franklin, by far the most of any town in our service area outside Bowling Green. Simpson County's terrain is gentle but varied: the Kentucky Geological Survey puts Franklin's courthouse at 720 feet and says sinkhole-plain elevations run from almost 800 feet in the southeastern corner of the county to 650 feet in the north. The county's lowest point, 490 feet, is where the West Fork of Drakes Creek leaves the northern part of Simpson County.

Simpson County has its own Pilot Knob, an isolated hill near the northwestern corner of the county that reaches 928 feet, more than 200 feet above the land around it. It is a different hill from the Pilot Knob near Smiths Grove in Warren County. Elsewhere in Simpson County, the survey lists Prices Mill at 577 feet and Providence at 736 feet.

Most of the county drinks public water. The Kentucky Geological Survey estimated that all of Simpson County's residents were on public water by 2008, up from 93 percent in 1999. For any private well or spring still used around Franklin, the survey advises treating water from limestone aquifers for bacteria and testing a home water source at least once a year, and it names salt and hydrogen sulfide as the natural ingredients most often found at objectionable levels.

The survey's karst page also warns that homes built over filled sinkholes may be damaged when the fill washes out and the soil cover collapses, one more reason to know where the sinkholes are before siting a tank. On the city side, Franklin Water Works has a project approved in June 2025 to replace an out-of-service standpipe with a larger water tower on higher ground, though the state's database shows it as not yet funded.
